I Cancelled My SEO Tool Subscription for 30 Days. Here’s What Happened.
The rules
No Semrush. No Ahrefs. No paid SEO tool of any kind. For 30 days I managed my sites using only free alternatives: Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free), Ubersuggest’s free tier, and manual SERP analysis. The goal wasn’t to prove paid tools are useless — it was to find out exactly where the free options fall short and whether that gap is worth $200+/month.
What happened
Barely noticed. Google Search Console handled rank tracking for my own sites. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gave me basic backlink data. I could still write content, optimise pages, and monitor traffic. The muscle memory of checking Semrush every morning was the hardest thing to break.
The cracks appeared. I needed competitor backlink data for a guest post campaign and couldn’t get it. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools only shows YOUR site’s data, not competitors. Ubersuggest’s free tier ran out of credits in two days. I was flying blind on what competitors were doing.
Content planning became a guessing game. Without keyword difficulty scores and search volume data, I was choosing topics based on gut feeling instead of data. I wrote three articles — two of them targeted keywords that were way too competitive for my domain authority. Wasted effort.
A site I manage dropped from position 3 to position 11 for a key term. Without backlink monitoring, I didn’t catch that two high-authority links had been removed until it was too late. I would have caught this in the first 24 hours with Ahrefs alerts.
The scorecard
Google Search Console + Analytics handles 90% of what you need for your own sites. You don’t need Semrush for this.
This is where free tools completely fail. You cannot see competitor backlinks, keyword rankings, or traffic estimates without a paid tool.
You can guess, but you’ll waste time targeting keywords you can’t rank for. Keyword difficulty data saves hours of wasted effort.
Lost backlinks killed my rankings and I didn’t know for days. Paid tools catch this instantly.
The bottom line
The SEO industry oversells these tools to beginners who don’t need them yet. But for anyone generating revenue from organic search, the competitor intelligence and link monitoring alone are worth $200/month. Start free. Upgrade when your traffic (and revenue) justifies it.
